Sources of Climate-Smart Agriculture Information for Cameroonian Farmers in Bachua and Matazem

Abstract

This study examined the types and perceived influence of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) information available to smallholder farmers in Bachua and Matazem, with the aim of identifying communication channels that could support wider uptake. A qualitative approach was adopted, using focus group discussions involving 400 farmers across the two communities in the West and North West Regions of Cameroon. The findings showed that farmers' shops were the principal source of CSA information, identified by 60.0% of participants. Social media accounted for 22.5%, television for 11.25%, and radio for 6.25%. Vendors in farmers' shops were described as informal extension agents who provided practical guidance on seed varieties, planting methods, crop care, intercropping, irrigation, fertiliser application, and pest management. Participants also reported awareness of CSA practices while describing challenges associated with excessive or unpredictable rainfall, emerging pests, and water scarcity. Social media offered visual and interactive information, although access was constrained by smartphone ownership, data costs, connectivity, and digital literacy. Television and radio were less frequently used because of limited agricultural programming, unsuitable scheduling, language barriers, and content that did not always reflect smallholder conditions. The study concludes that CSA communication should combine formal media with trusted local intermediaries. Community radio, farmers' shops, extension personnel, and digital platforms may be used in complementary ways, with content delivered in accessible local languages and tailored to farmers' practical needs.
