Enhancing Productivity and Profitability of Linseed through Cluster Frontline Demonstrations in Jharkhand, India

Abstract
Cluster frontline demonstrations (CFLDs) on linseed were conducted for five years in different districts of Jharkhand to assess the performance of improved production technologies relative to farmers' practices. A total of 2,832 demonstrations covering 1,040 ha were implemented using an improved variety, seed treatment, line sowing, weed management, nutrient management, and plant protection measures. Across the study period, the demonstration plots recorded an average seed yield of 7.73 q/ha, compared with 5.20 q/ha under farmers' practices, representing an average yield increase of 32.69%. The annual yield increase under the demonstrations ranged from 30.80% to 37.37% during the five-year evaluation period. The five-year average extension gap and technology gap were 2.53 q/ha and 4.27 q/ha, respectively, while the mean technology index was 35.60%. Economic analysis showed that CFLDs achieved an average gross return of ₹36,513/ha and an average net return of ₹18,991/ha, with a benefit-cost ratio of 2.08. In comparison, farmers' practices produced an average gross return of ₹25,289/ha and an average net return of ₹10,265/ha, with a benefit-cost ratio of 1.68. The average additional return from the demonstrations was ₹8,726/ha. Overall, the findings indicate that the demonstrated package of improved linseed production practices was associated with higher productivity and profitability than the prevailing farmers' practices across the five-year demonstration period.
