Comparative Evaluation of Mungbean Varieties for Yield and Yield Associated Traits

Abstract

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] is an important short-duration pulse crop valued for its nutritional quality, adaptability and suitability in diverse cropping systems. Identification of high-yielding varieties with desirable yield-associated traits is essential for improving mungbean productivity under specific agro-ecological conditions. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate five mungbean varieties, namely WGG 37, WGG 42, MGG 295, VIRAT and IPM 2-14, for yield and yield-associated traits during Kharif 2022 at the College Farm, Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU), Hyderabad, Telangana. The experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design with four replications. Observations were recorded on days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, clusters plant⁻¹, pods plant⁻¹, pod length, seeds pod⁻¹, 100-seed weight and seed yield plant⁻¹. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among varieties for pods plant⁻¹, seeds pod⁻¹, seed yield plant⁻¹ and 100-seed weight, whereas differences for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, clusters plant⁻¹ and pod length were non-significant. MGG 295 recorded the highest seed yield plant⁻¹ (9.99 g) and pods plant⁻¹ (22.45), while WGG 42 recorded the highest 100-seed weight (6.13 g). MGG 295 and WGG 42 recorded the highest seeds pod⁻¹ (12.75). MGG 295 combined the highest seed yield with the highest mean pod number; however, the present varietal comparison does not establish pod production as the principal determinant of seed yield. The results demonstrate the potential of MGG 295 for higher seed productivity under the agro-climatic conditions of the study and provide a basis for further evaluation across seasons and locations.
