Abstract
Banana cultivation contributes to horticultural production in Chhattisgarh, but changes in cultivated area, total output and yield may follow different trajectories. This study examined trends in the area, production and productivity of banana in Bilaspur district and Chhattisgarh state from 2007–08 to 2016–17. Secondary time-series data were obtained from publications and reports of the National Horticulture Board, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and the Directorate of Horticulture, Chhattisgarh. Linear trend equations and log-linear compound growth rate estimates were used to describe changes over the study period. In Bilaspur district, the cultivated area increased from 1,927 hectares to 2,659 hectares, while production rose from 45,073 to 47,772 metric tonnes. Productivity declined from 23.39 to 17.96 tonnes per hectare. The reported compound annual growth rates for the district were 3.50% for area, −1.19% for production and −4.64% for productivity. At the state level, the corresponding rates were 13.52%, 12.42% and −0.97%. The findings indicate that area expansion was more pronounced than gains in yield, with distinct growth patterns between the district and state. These results demonstrate the value of examining area, production and productivity together when assessing district-level horticultural performance. Further assessment of local production conditions is needed to understand changes in productivity.
